Personally, I usually have 3-6 horses in my inventory. Testing is too bothersome, especially if you have to do it for every new mod. If you have more horses than needed to counteract your goods, it can actually be worse than not having any. In such mods, having horses is always useful. What's heavy trade goods changes depending on the mod, and some mod make any food count. Thus, if you have no heavy trade goods, horses in inventory do nothing for you. Items that are considered "Heavy Trade Goods" slow you down when they're in your inventory.
